The president of Ocean County College's Gay-Straight Alliance asked me to design a flyer to promote the groups's meetings. Unfortunately, the first design I came up with was deemed "too masculine" by the group's faculty advisor, so a second, more agreeable version was created. This second version was ultimately approved, printed, and posted throughout OCC's campus during the Spring 2013 semester.
Version 1: The overall aesthetic of the original design was based largely on the term "gay-straight alliance", particularly the word "alliance", which made me think of an alliance between a bunch of superheroes in a cartoon or comic book. The two characters are identical in every way, representing the GSA's philosophy that everyone should be treated equally, as well as the idea that gay people and straight people are exactly the same in real life. The characters' "gays and straights unite!" pose harkens back to the superhero theme, as they gain power from an inverted triangle, a well known LGBT symbol, which has been turned into a crystal. Finally, both the beams of light coming from the triangle and the scallopped background on the bottom half introduce a subtle reminder of the rainbow, another symbol of the LGBT community.
Version 2: The second version shares many aspects with the original, however this revised design is softer and more colorful. In order to make this version less masculine, female figures were introduced alongside the males from the initial design. To make the people depicted even less specific so that anyone could relate to them, they were rendered in a solid color without showing any features. There is just enough detail to know that there are two females and two males in the image. Finally, softer, rounded fonts were chosen to replace the harsher, rectilinear ones used in the original version, and a rainbow was added behind the figures for an extra burst of LGBT flair.
